Surfing in Hawaii
Discover this sport, in the Hawaiian waters it originated from. Surfing schools in Maui can teach you to surf at all levels. Beginners take advantage of the small waves on the south side of Maui, while both novices and advanced riders can enhance their performance by investing in quality surf lessons. Lessons are typically 2 hours and include equipment and instruction. If you are looking to drop in on the pros, you'll find them at both Ho'okipa Beach Park and Honolua Bay. If that isn't enough action, you can hope for the rare occurrence of Peahi or "Jaws". This dynamic natural occurrence is when specific ocean and weather conditions happen simultaneously to form waves up to 60-100ft and speeds up to 30mph. These waves only break about six times per year in the winter months. Hundreds of spectators come out to witness this amazing event.
Wailea Beach is the perfect place to take up this form of wave riding. The body board is ridden laying down, or with one knee touching the board and is easy for the entire family. Bodyboarders seek shallow conditions where waves are breaking close to the shore line.
A relatively new sport, Skimboarding is a sport similar to surfing which takes place near the shore. The skimboarder stands about twenty feet from the ocean with skimboard in hand and waits for a wave. When they see a wave they run towards it with their skimboard still in hand. Upon reaching the wet sand they drop the board and jump onto it as quickly as possible. The skimmer then glides out into the ocean toward the oncoming wave, banks off of it, and rides it back into shore. Wailea Beaches are a great place for beginners while Big Beach in nearby Makena offers a bit more challenging break for experts.
