“Vacation Rental Tips”photo

Renting a private home, villa or condo is a smart decision if you crave the comforts of home, open space and privacy. Most vacation rental companies also offer features that you’ve come to appreciate from hotels including housekeeping and concierge services at a much more affordable price.

Navigating the vacation rental world is not as daunting as it may sound. Whether you are planning your getaway to Maui, Hawaii or internationally, the same basic tips should help you find your perfect vacation rental.

Inventory

Book with a reputable company that offers a lot of options. Each home is different so the more options you have to choose from, the higher your chances are of being placed in an ideal vacation rental. Inventory also provides cushion for unexpected mishaps that happen like plumbing or electric issues. You want a company that can easily move you to another home, villa or condo within the area you desire. Nothing ruins a vacation than being stuck at a rental because you booked with someone who didn’t have any other available ones to re-locate you to.

Included Amenities

Always ask what amenities are included in the nightly price. While most hotels charge for parking and wireless connection increasing your average daily rate, vacation rentals usually offer this complimentary. There also additional perks that may surprise you so it’s important to ask so you can take advantage of them. At Destination Resorts Hawaii, we offer the following to all our guests who book a vacation home, villa or condo:

  • 24-hour self parking
  • In-room Wi-Fi access
  • Housekeeping service
  • 24-hour manager on duty
  • $20 dining certificate to Ruth's Chris Steak House
  • $20 dining certificate to Tommy Bahama restaurant
  • 15% breakfast discount at Longhi's
  • Foodland's local Maika'i grocery discount card
  • Complimentary recyclable tote bag
  • Preferred rates at Wailea Gold, Wailea Emerald and Wailea "Old Blue" golf courses

Be Specific

Each vacation rental is different, not just in layout but in décor so it’s important you provide details on the persons using the rental. Is there a family member that can benefit from being on the ground floor or near an elevator instead of stairs? Will there be plenty of kids therefore avoid the rentals that may have expensive art or furniture. Is it a group couples’ getaway requiring two master suites? These kinds of details will help fit you to the perfect vacation rental.

Speak with a local reservation team

No one can help you navigate the area and find the best location for you than a local. They know where the tourists and isolated spots are allowing them to place you in a vacation rental that fits your dream vacation. Love the nightlife and want to walk everywhere? They’ll place you where all the action is. Feel like being a hermit so you can relax in peace? They’ll make sure to put you in a safe and quiet location. A local reservationist can also provide you with tips on where to eat, shop and play.

Ask for Deals

Many vacation rental management companies often have enough inventory to offer seasonal travel deals that you can greatly benefit from, especially if your travel dates are flexible.

Power of Google

Technology is amazing. Use it. Make sure your ocean side or golf-front vacation rental is really located where it’s supposed to be by using Google Earth or Google Street View. Here’s an example of one of our Hawaii vacation rental resorts, Makena Surf.
