“Summer Activities, Festivals and Events on Maui”
In addition to pristine beaches, playful parks, exciting hikes and postcard-perfect views, there are also plenty of activities, special events, concerts and festivals to enjoy on Maui. Here are a few of our recommendations for this summer.
59th Annual Makawao Rodeo, Thursday, July 3 – Saturday, July 5 - Maui Roping Club presents the 59th Makawao Rodeo at the Oskie Rice Arena on Olinda Road at the Kaanaolo Ranch. Come Thursday and Friday at 9 am to watch the qualifying runs (free admission during qualifying runs). Friday evening at 7 pm is the exciting Bull Bash. On Saturday and Sunday at 1pm watch the rodeo as competitors ride, rope and run for prizes. 808-572-0386
July 4th Fireworks - You can always count on seeing catching a firework display on the fourth of July. However, the list of locations isn’t usually released until a couple of days before. Here are the usual suspects but we highly recommend you call the venues in advance or read the daily paper to confirm.
- Wailea Beach – The major resorts usually play nice together and put on a firework show for their guests. You can enjoy it too by parking yourself on the public beaches along Wailea and north Kihei.
- Lahaina – The Maui Chamber of Commerce usually hosts a firework show. You can’t go wrong with a view from Front Street.
Na Hoku Hou - Award Winners Concert, Saturday, July 12, 6 p.m. - Na Hoku Hanohano Awards is the Grammy’s of Hawaii presented by the Hawaii Association of Record Arts. Each year, the Association recognizes the best in Hawaii’s music industry. This special night brings together this year’s winners and previous for a memorable concert. The concert is at the Maui Arts Cultural Center. 808-242-7469
Hawaiian Music Series in Lahaina, Thursday, July 31, 6 p.m. - 7:30 p.m. -This is a free, outdoor concert on the lawn of Baldwin Home Museum at the corner of Front and Dickenson Streets. Hawaiian musicians perform in the kanikapila style, sharing their music, vocal talent and love for Hawaii. Chair seating is limited. Low beach chairs, mats and blankets are welcome. 808-661-3262
20th Annual Maui Calls Friday, August 8, 6 p.m. – 8 p.m. - Buy your tickets early for this one. If you love food, this is the event to go to. It is the signature fundraising event for the Maui Arts Cultural Center supported by all the local community and Maui’s top chefs. The theme this year is “Celebrating the Songs of Hawaii” so you can bet there will be plenty of live music and dancing under starts. 808-242-7469

Kaanapali Fresh Food & Wine Festival, Saturday, August 30 - In this signature event, Kaanapali chefs and restaurants collaborate in their showcase of culinary sustainability to create a memorable dining extravaganza.
Festivals of Aloha, Maui Nui Style, Friday, September 5, 6 p.m. – 9 p.m. - The Festival of Aloha, Maui Nui Style incorporates various events throughout September and October. Opening ceremony is free at Wailuku First Friday with a street party, hula, and live entertainment. All events are open to the public. 808-870-8047
Ku Mai Ka Hula, 9th Annual International Hula Competition, Friday, September 12 - Saturday, September 13 - This two-day international competition puts a spotlight on the art of hula. Friday evening will be the solo competition for the title of Mr. and Ms. Hula Maui; Saturday will be the group competitions for Wahine Kahiko & ‘Auana, Kane Kahiko & ‘Auana, and Kupuna ‘Auana. The event will be held at the Maui Arts Cultural Center. 808-242-7469
Pailolo Challenge, Saturday, September 13, 8 a.m. - The Pailolo Challenge is an incredible 26-mile downwind canoe race from D.T. Fleming Beach on Maui to Kaunakakai Pier on Molokai. Paddling teams from all over the globe come to participate in "The World's Funnest Canoe Race." 808-893-2124
