“Hiking Maui - Beyond the Beautiful Beaches”photo

Maui generally conjures up images of beautiful beaches with swaying palms, but there are a number of incredible hikes in this tropical paradise that you won’t want to miss. From quick little roadside jaunts that lead to towering and fragrant Eucalyptus trees ¬†like the Waikamoi Nature Trail (just past mile marker 9 on the Road to Hana), or longer (3+ hour) hikes through bamboo forests with staggering ravines that culminate at the spectacular 400’ Waimoku Falls or delve deep into the crater of a dormant volcano - Maui has it all!

Swinging Bridges, a local favorite in Waihee, is true to its name with suspended bridges that sway in the wind as they span the widest streambeds in two places (there are smaller streams that will get you wet further in) and ends at a waterfall where locals and visitors alike jump into the chilly waters. From here, look further in for a glimpse at the ”Wall of Tears” – where as many as 17 waterfalls flow over the mountains at once.

While Swinging Bridges winds through the valley floor, the Waihee Ridge Trail, just a little further up the road, soars into the clouds above and affords a birds-eye-view of the Swinging Bridges trail below.

The La Perouse Bay hike, south of Makena on Maui’s sunny and drier side, leads you along the ocean’s edge where you will be surprised to find black goats appear almost out of nowhere.¬† Black lava and white coral contrast with the blue-green waters and dramatic vistas of the rolling green slopes of Haleakala provide unique backdrops for photographs.

There are several guide books and websites that detail the exact locations of Maui’s hiking trails and provide valuable insider information as some of these hikes can be hard to find. Precautions are also outlined as some of these hikes can be strenuous and are not suitable for everyone. Whatever your abilities, you’ll be able to find incredible hikes on Maui that will make your Maui vacation – No Ka Oi! The Best!
