“Fantastic Week in Penthouse 307”

This was our first trip to Maui and we debated between this property, the Grand Wailea, or the Four Seasons. We made the right call! The Grand Wailea, next door, has a "disneyland" feel to it - loud and crowded. Wailea Beach Villas are situated such that you have every convenience a large hotel can offer and a few that they cannot. No matter how nice a hotel is, if you're in a basic room with a couple of beds and no kitchen, your vacation experience will be driven by your need to find food and find some space to relax where you're not literally bumping into your loved ones.

We were so impressed with our kitchen - there were two fridges and there wasn't a single utensil or item (e.g. blender, food processor, colander, etc) we looked for that we couldn't find. Our lanai had a grill and casual seating as well as a table and chairs for outdoor dining.

The rest of the condo - two bedrooms, living room, and office/den were well appointed and had very comfy furniture. The master bath and closet were a dream. There was a separate laundry room as well.

The unit sits right above the family pool and I was worried that this would be loud for us. It really wasn't. The pools at this property were never overflowing with people, and while we could certainly hear children playing when we were on the lanai, they were supervised by moms and dads and well behaved. More importantly, the windows of the unit were, very very good because from the inside we heard nothing.

The view, while lovely, would have been better had we been on the 4th or 5th floors. The sunset is not really visible from the lanai. I'm not sure many penthouse units other than the corner ones with the wraparound balconies would provide a perfect sunset view but this would be something to check on when booking if it is important to you. You can certainly walk down to the beach - it takes only a few minutes - and watch the sunset.

We were able to get chairs at the adult only pool whenever we tried, and everyone there was very low key and relaxed.

The central location of this unit means very little walking to lobby and therefore to the gate to the Shops at Wailea. It is so convenient to have this nearby - the Shops include clothing stores, restaurants, a dive shop where you can rent beach equipment, art galleries, and a general store where you can find convenience items you may have forgotten to pack.

Is this a pricey way to travel? Sure. BUT...I do want to say that it isn't hard at all to drop $100 each meal for bfast and lunch for 4 in Maui and $200+ for dinner. We had a few lunches on the go and one special dinner out, but with two trips to Safeway, we saved an awful lot by eating in our unit or prepping food for a cooler and taking off for the day. And savings aside, with two teenagers who like to sleep and aren't always in sync with their hunger, a lot of headaches were avoided as we could all get up and fix ourselves food at our leisure! And more importantly, this feels like home away from home. You will be wanting for nothing here - I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to even my most discerning friends.
