Kung Hei Fat Choy!  Happy Chinese New Year, the Year of the Horse.

While the first horse was brought to Maui over 200 years ago on July 7, 1803, we have rich tradition of horsemanship on Maui, including the paniolo cowboys in Upcountry.

Most unique is women quickly became skilled riders, but preferred to ride astride, which was not considered dignified for a lady.  Rather than be confined to riding side saddle; billowy, flowing skirts known as a pa’u were created as camouflage.

On Maui, you can see the tradition of pa’u riders in their glorious flowing pa’u and gorgeous lei at the King Kamehameha Day parade in June.
