"With the magnificent Pacific views and elegant Maui condos along the beach, our stay here was magical."
In a perfect world, you would have scored coveted tickets to the Super Bowl and will be watching it live. Alas, you are on the world’s best island amidst the warm sunshine and tropical waters in the middle of winter. We think you got the better deal. You don’t have to worry about the cold and you can enjoy the biggest sports event of the year wearing your board shorts. Here are our top bars, restaurants and venues to watch the Super Bowl on Maui.
Monkeypod Kitchen in Wailea
Chef Peter Merriman, one of the founders of Hawaii Regional Cuisine, is the secret weapon behind Monkeypod’s delicious menu. More than 90 percent of the ingredients used in the menu are locally-sourced. We are obsessed with wood-roasted chicken wings, jalapeno poppers, Hamakua wild mushroom and bourgeois with Big Island lobster pizzas, bulgogi pork tacos, fish and chips and the King Kong cheeseburger. 10 Wailea Ike Drive, 808-891-2322
Tiffany’s Bar and Grill in Wailuku
Don’t let the name fool you. If you want to go where the locals go, this is it. There are plenty of flat screens to keep your eyes glued on. The food here is definitely family style. We recommend the kimchi fried rice, crispy pork, spicy wings, sizzling steak bites, misoyaki butterfish, shrimp tempura and roast duck with plenty of local beer to wash it down with. Linger too long and you may find yourself singing karaoke. Parking is on the gravel lot across the restaurant. 1424 Lower Main Street, 808-249-0052
Maui Brewing Company in Lahaina
It’s the local brewing company, do we need to explain more? Even the ketchup and mustard is made in-house. With more than 20 local brews on tap, this is the place for beer lovers. Must try are the fried mac balls, kalua pork sliders, black rock dip, wild hog pizza, jambalaya and coconut porter beef stew. 4405 Honoapiilani Highway, 808-669-3474
Pailolo Bar and Grill Sports Page in Kaanapali
Pailolo is an outdoor sports bar that will allow you to escape quickly to the beach and cool-off if your team is fumbling. Burgers, tacos and sandwiches dominate the menu with a variety of brews, wine and specialty cocktails. If your team takes home the trophy, send the featured drink of the day with compliments to your losing buds, the Mango Monsoon will soon ease their pain until next year’s Super Bowl. 6 Kai Ala Drive, 808-667-3200
In Your Own Private Vacation Home
Missing the comfort of a couch and not sharing the flat screen with strangers? If you are renting a private home, villa or condo, staying in to watch the Super Bowl with your family is our top pick. You can yell at the TV as loud as you want, no one will tease you for publicly praising those clever Super Bowl ads, and staying in will be more friendly to your wallet. At Destination Resorts Hawaii, we offer you a Foodland Maikai discount card where you can buy the food you want instead of settling for what’s on the menu. We recommend a variety of Foodland’s freshly-prepared poke from ahi, tako (octopus), and mussels; sushi rolls, crispy fried chicken, wings, potato or macaroni salad, your favorite chips and dips, and of course, local beer. Some of the villas also have outdoor lanai for grilling hot dogs and burgers.
Enjoy the Super Bowl and good luck to your team!
Coming back next year? Make sure you book your private home, villa or condo so you can enjoy your own Super Bowl party on Maui.
