Maui, Hawaii - carbon credits as package incentive
Destination Resorts Hawaii, provider of condominium and villa rentals on Maui, Hawaii, is promoting an interesting deal that they're pitching as green travel. The 'Honua Makuahine (Mother Earth)' package sounds tempting, but its most eye-catching component is its inclusion of a $250 carbon credit per booking.
Deal: Guests who take 'em up on this offer receive five nights lodging, a rental car, free parking and the $250 carbon credit (as well as the good feelings that accompany such a purchase). Rates start at $1,080 (pre-tax), based on a stay in a one-bedroom condominium; larger accommodations are available for higher rates. Even without the carbon credit, the package would seem pretty well-priced, but not a steal.
When: This package is on offer for stays April 1 through June 15, 2008. Use promotion code "GREENPKG" when booking online.
Considerations: Do you feel that carbon credits serve as adequate compensation for the greenhouse gases emitted traveling to a destination such as Maui, or are they more a salve for our eco-consciences? Is it hard to get past eco-tourism's Catch-22?
If you feel carbon credits are going in the right direction, you might be interested to know that $250 offsets about 3.5 round-trip flights from Los Angeles (LAX) to Maui (OGG; JHM) - a stat by CarbonPlanet.com included on Destination Resorts Hawaii's press release about this package. The $250 credit is purchased from Rainforest2Reef, a nonprofit conservation organization that plants trees with the money.
