When the cluster of starts known as Makali’i made its annual appearance recently, it was a signal to look for the new crescent moon that starts the Makahiki Season.  This year it began on November 24 and lasts through the fall and winter season for four months.  In honor of the Hawaiian god Lono, it is meant as a period of rest from war, farming and fishing and a period of peace and festivities.
